Carnival (カーニバル Kānibaru) is a game released by Namco in 1987. It is a mechanical "medal game" - effectively a redemption game that dispenses medals instead of tickets. It was only released in Japan.

Gameplay[]

Carnival is a roulette-like game which plays similarly to the American arcade game Colorama. There are five numbered buttons - 2, 4, 6, 8, and 20. The player bets on which number they believe the wheel will land on; if they guess successfully, they will earn the same amount of medals as the number. They will also progress deeper into the second/third wheel, and if the player guesses correctly all three times, a bonus of 90 medals is earned.

Three versions of the machine were produced. The first is Pac-Man themed (specifically labeled a "Pac-Land" model on the official flyer), featuring Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, Baby Pac-Man, and the Ghosts on it. The second model is based on Mappy, and the third model is based on Dig Dug. It is confirmed by the original developer that Pac-Man was the first model released.

Trivia[]

  • A video game adaption, titled Pac-Carnival, was released in 1996.
  • Carnival had to be rushed to completion, as the department of Namco developing it was on the verge of collapsing. To save costs, the front image was merely a piece of paper, with a light fixture in the back. The cabinet/electronics were generic ones from Kato Manufacturing Co.[1]
  • There were several other Carnival games produced after this one, not themed after Pac-Man. They include:
    • Carnival-II - features Super Xevious artwork.
    • Carnival-III - features Family Stadium artwork.
    • Carnival-IV - features The Legend of Valkyrie artwork.
    • Carnival-V, VI, VII - designs are unknown, but confirmed to exist.
