Pac-Man + Tournaments, known as just Pac-Man from the mid-2010s onward, is a mobile game released in 2013 by Bandai Namco Entertainment. The game is available on iOS and Android devices; it was also released on the GameStick game console (prior to its shutdown).
Gameplay[]
The game is a variation of the original Pac-Man, but with numerous additional features added in:
- Hundreds of new mazes to unlock
- An in-game currency used to continue after a Game Over or to buy mazes
- Daily achievements that can earn the player in-game currency
- Dozens upon dozens of fruits
- Some events will give Ghosts costumes and hats
- Online tournaments for players to participate in in order to earn in-game currency
- A small handful of new features, being bonus rounds and speedy Pac-Dots
- Beating a group of mazes now earns the player in-game currency
Story Mode[]
In August 2021, a Story Mode was added. This mode plays similarly to the previously released Pac-Man Hats (and its sequel); there is a map screen of mazes to complete, alongside additional power-ups and gimmicks. The story of the mode is that Pac-Man must repair various arcade machines; doing so will unlock Pac-Skins.
Events[]
Adventure[]
These are events that have self-paced levels for a limited time. The player can collect cards that will add to the Pac-Album. Levels can be replayed and players can play bonus stages for more items. In each Adventure event, the player can collect cards for a "Pac-Album" to complete a picture.
Tournaments[]
Tournaments are limited-time events featuring a certain amount of stages; the levels cannot be replayed, and must be played without taking a break. Players can earn prizes for completing them.
Arcade Mode[]
Only one option called "Classic", with three difficulty settings. Classic mode is a recreation of the original Pac-Man game; it is considered somewhat poor compared to many other ports of the game, often noted as not being fully "arcade-accurate". There are checkpoints for every stage completed.
Power-Ups[]
The player is required to eat a certain amount of pellets to use these abilities. Some events may not allow power-ups to be used (such as in "Tournaments" and "Classic" mode), but they will work in the "Story Mode" and limited time "Adventures".
- Turbo - Once a certain number is achieved, Pac-Man will gain speed for a couple of seconds, giving the player the ability to eat ghosts and go through hazards such as fire without dying.
- Shield - after a good meal of pellets, Pac-Man gains the ability to be protected from Ghosts and other hazards for several seconds.
- Glitch - Similar to Pac-Man Hats' "Hacker" ability; Pac-Man freezes the ghosts.
- Freeze Blast - Once Pac-Man gobbled enough dots, he will do an explosion of ice that has a generous range and freezes ghosts, making them edible (without the need for a Power Pellet).
- Fireball - Similar to Pac-Man Hats' "Magician Hat" ability; Pac-Man shoots at the ghosts while facing them and can shoot more than once.
Store[]
Players can buy Pac-Skins or the currencies listed below.
Pac-Skins[]
These are skins to replace Pac-Man, Ghosts, Trails, Foods, and the Joystick with custom ones in the store. Some Pac-Skins are limited edition.
Currencies[]
This game has 5 currencies, which are:
- Pac-Cash - Used for getting more lives and Pac-Skins
- Pac-Token - Used for getting Pac-Skins and more lives
- Logic Board - Used for the arcade section
- Pac-Diamond - Used for the arcade section
- Adventure Tickets - Used for getting power-ups and extra lives when in "Adventure" Events.
Achievements[]
There are 25 achievements.
List of Events[]
Crossover events (pre-"Story Mode")[]
Pac-Man + Tournaments has had numerous, limited-time crossovers with other franchises or brands that are in the Tournaments or Adventure levels. These include:
- Hello Kitty ♥ Pac-Man (mid-2017) - A new set of nine mazes called "HELLO" was added. All of the ghosts wore hair bows, and the giant Pac-Man in the first intermission is replaced with Hello Kitty.
- Sonic the Hedgehog (early 2018) - A maze was added called "DASH!". Same layout as the original Pac-Man maze, but Pac-Man and the Ghosts are replaced with Sonic and Motobugs. Additionally, the maze walls resemble Green Hill Zone, and the Power Pellets are video monitors.
- Red Bull Pac-Man (late 2018) - A new set of mazes could be unlocked by entering a code found on actual Red Bull cans. It also added a Red Bull power-up.
- Pac-Man Goes NBA (2021) - Various new costumes and other visual elements were added in Events. Every single NBA team (of the time period) was represented in the game.
Both Hello Kitty ♥ Pac-Man and Red Bull Pac-Man have been released as separate games outside of the app (on both a "Tiny Arcade" keychain toy and a full-sized arcade machine, respectively).

Trivia[]
- As part of a "Pac-Man Pink Ribbon Campaign" in October 2014, a special maze was added to Pac-Man + Tournaments as a $0.99 (USD) download; all proceeds from the purchase would be donated to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. This DLC was also added to the iOS release of Pac-Man (which had not yet been retooled as Tournaments) and the mobile ports of Ms. Pac-Man.
- As an April Fool's prank in 2017, it was announced that "Pack-Man" would come to Pac-Man + Tournaments, featuring a square Pac-Man.[1]
- The achievement "Be Like Billy!" is a reference to the video game player Billy Mitchell, often credited as being the first person to complete a "perfect Pac-Man game".
