Pac-Man Wiki

Magma Opus is the third Volcano level, and the 16th level overall, in Pac-Man World 2 and its remake, Pac-Man World 2 Re-Pac. This level is made with more lava sections than Volcanic Panic and is the level right before Clyde in the Caldera. This level is also full of rising and falling platforms, killing Pac-Man if he does not manage to make it across lava sections and does not have the metal power-up scattered throughout the level. This takes place in the magma chamber of the volcano. Stony also appears two times in this level (three times in Re-Pac) and in fact, Pac-Man has the ability to defeat Stony both times in this level by using the steel ball power-up and butt-bouncing on him.

In the original, it's possible to get 7,650 points by eating enough Ghosts in a row in one area. The Galaxian's maze uses unique scenery that isn't found anywhere else in the game and is also unique for having warps on the top and bottom.

The final section of the level involves rolling down multiple slides, and collecting the Fruits along the way. In the original game, the first slide forces you into a Checkpoint, and you can't get back up, so if you miss anything on the slide and you're going for 100% level completion, you'll be forced to redo everything. Re-Pac fixes this by having only one Checkpoint throughout the slide and placing it off the slide's path.

Other version differences[]

In the Japanese version:

  • The first Stony was replaced with a fiery Pacasite, and hitting the first blue switch it guards spawns the elevator needed to progress immediately instead of enabling the second one. The Pac-Dot Chain summoned by this switch was also removed.
  • The elevators before the "7,650 area" have no fireballs shooting over them.
  • The lava chamber before the slides had more elevators added to it as well as a Metal Ball. The collapsing pillars were removed. The elevators in this area were also shifted up slightly so that they only barely dip into the lava.

In Re-Pac:

  • Most of the sections that had collapsing pillars in the original now require Pac-Man to walk on a rolling stone pillar.
  • Lava was added to the bridge area, which also now collapses.
  • The second blue switch in the Stony area is significantly out of Pac-Man's reach; hitting the first blue switch adds lava to the room to make it accessible. Hitting the second blue switch also adds lava to the room to make the Neanderpac hallway accessible. The elevator to there was done away with; Pac-Man must now do a super Butt Bounce instead.
  • Whereas the path to the second Stony was originally optional, it is now required, as the switch the Stony guards opens up a door barring entry to the last third of the level.
  • The lava chamber before the slides was replaced with a wind tunnel where Pac-Man has to dodge fireballs from stone statues.

Trivia[]

  • In the first area with a Stony in the original game, it's possible for Pac-Man to die before he actually touches the lava, even in metal form. Coincidentally, this is how lava works in real life; the "glitch" makes its behavior more realistic.
  • The level name is a pun on the Latin term "magnum opus", meaning "masterpiece".
  • The level's music is significantly different than that of Into the Volcano and Volcanic Panic. This is the only non-boss level with this distinction.
