The Melon is a fruit that first appeared in the original Pac-Man arcade game. In this game, you can eat it for 1,000 points. It is also the same point value in the Pac-Man World series.
Trivia[]
- Some 1980s Pac-Man write-ups and merchandising (both official and unofficial) would misconstrue or mislabel the Melon item, most commonly as "Grapes". The exact reasoning for this is unclear; though the confusion may have stemmed from the Pac-Man melon's design resembling traditional Japanese melons, which were less common overseas.
- During development of Ms. Pac-Man, General Computer Corporation interpreted the Melon sprite as being poorly-drawn bunches of grapes. This confusion resulted in the "grapes" being scrapped entirely as a fruit in Ms. Pac-Man.
- Presumably due to confusion over the Melon's design, some earlier home ports of Pac-Man replace it with different types of fruit. The Intellivision version, as well as the unreleased ColecoVision port, change the melon into a pineapple; the IBM PC and Atarisoft VIC-20 ports change it into a lemon.
- Oddly, the MZ-700 version - when run with an external PCG chip - replaces the melon with the player ship from Galaxian, leading to the Galaxian Flagship item in the next set of rounds.
