Namco Museum (ナムコミュージアム Namuko Myūjiamu) for the PlayStation Portable is a game compilation released in 2005 by Namco. The compilation notably features four newly-created "Arrangement" games, including Pac-Man Arrangement (2005).
This collection, in its original form, was exclusively released on the Japanese and South Korean market; it would be followed by a sequel titled Namco Museum Vol. 2. In North America and Europe, both volumes' contents were included in a single compilation, Namco Museum Battle Collection (which was released in between the Japanese/Korean volumes).
It is not to be confused with the original Namco Museum Vol. 1, which was later released digitally for the PlayStation Portable as a "PS1 Classic" release.
Overview[]
The compilation's main menu is divided into two rolling wheels: one featuring "Arrangement" games and the other featuring "Original" games. The "arrangement" games are newly-developed titles for this compilation; they are not to be confused with the identically-titled Arrangement games seen in the Namco Classic Collection series (and in some of the Mass Media-developed Namco Museum collections).
The "original" games are emulated ports of Namco's arcade titles; though each game has added additional features. Upon inserting a "credit", a menu appears allowing the player to start the game, adjust the game's settings or display options, or continue from a later, previously-cleared level in the game. Each game also features a set of "Maniac Options", including a "Hi-Score Attack" mode and the ability to switch between different ROM versions (e.g. an "old" and "new" ROM set of Pac-Man).
Each game features a multiplayer wireless mode for use with two PSP consoles.
Games[]
Arrangement games[]
The "Arrangement" games menu features the following games:
- Pac-Man Arrangement (2005)
- Galaga Arrangement (2005)
- New Rally-X Arrangement (2005)
- Dig Dug Arrangement (2005)
Original games[]
Across all regions, the "Original" games menu includes the following:
- Pac-Man (1980)
- Galaxian (1979)
- Rally-X (1980)
- Galaga (1981)
- New Rally-X (1981)
- Dig Dug (1982)
The original Japanese version also includes Ms. Pac-Man (1982); however, it was removed in the South Korean release, likely as a result of the legal issues surrounding the game.
Trivia[]
- This is the first Namco Museum title to use proper emulation of the arcade titles; whereas previous volumes would use recompiled versions of the games based on their original source code, resulting in varying inaccuracies within the games.
- While the collection's emulation is mostly accurate, more arcade-perfect translations would appear in the following release, Namco Museum 50th Anniversary.
- In the South Korean release, Galaxian is renamed to "Old Galaga", and the Rally-X games are renamed to "Banngoo" (방구차, lit. "Fart Car"). This is seemingly in reference to common titles used for bootleg Korean imports of the games in the early 1980s (at a time in which arcade games were flat-out banned in the region).[1]
