PAC-Match!, also known as Chain Shot (チェインショット Cheinshotto) in Japan and Europe, is a mobile game released in 2001 by Namco. It is a remake of the 1985 FM-7 game Chain Shot (also known as SameGame) with various Namco-themed elements, most prominently Pac-Man. It received a sequel titled Pac-Match Party in 2010.
Gameplay[]
The game begins with a playfield filled with five different types of tiles. If two or more of the same tile are directly adjacent to each other (in any direction), they can be cleared; this makes those matching tiles disappear, resulting in surrounding tiles falling down. The player's main goal is to clear all tiles on the screen; though if the game becomes impossible to pass (as a result of unclearable tiles), the game is over.
The game features four graphical styles for the tiles: they are based on Pac-Man, Dig Dug, and two sets themed after Mr. Driller. There is also a difficulty selector, which alters the amount of tiles in the game:
- Easy - 6-by-6 tile grid
- Medium - 12-by-11 tile grid
- Hard - 15-by-14 tile grid
Trivia[]
- The Japanese title screen states "Special Thanks to MORISUKE", referencing the programmer of the original Chain Shot, Kuniaki Moribe (who goes under the nickname Morisuke). It is unclear if Morisuke was directly involved in this port's development, or if he is just credited for providing the license. Notably, the Game Boy version of SameGame features the same "special thanks" notice.
- A Christmas-themed version of Chain Shot was released in Japan in December of 2002 (alongside a Christmas-themed Mr. Driller variant), exclusively through the J-SKY service.[2] This version does not appear to retain any Pac-Man-related assets.
