Pac-Man Wiki

PUCK is the deuteragonist of Shadow Labyrinth and its adaptation, “Pac-Man: Circle”, and the game's incarnation of Pac-Man. She is a spherical support-type Func-Bot[1] created from the Nanobite Material and separated consciousness of Thebe, carrying her straightforward personality from her other half. She summons Swordsman No. 8 to the planet Xevious for the purpose of completing Operation Sheyenne.

History[]

Shadow Labyrinth[]

Main article: Shadow Labyrinth

During gameplay, PUCK will follow Swordsman No. 8 as he ventures across the planet's many regions. At first, PUCK is completely unable to attack enemies; however, there are three obtainable ESP Actions that allow her to do so: ESP PUCK Shot, ESP PUCK Spark, and ESP PUCK Thunder. There are also a few PERKs that pertain to PUCK specifically; these include Ora Gain, which allows her to collect Ora from defeated enemies, and the ones that boost the aforementioned ESP Actions.

Mini-PUCK[]

When the Swordsman touches an activated D-Line, he and PUCK will perform an M-Phase Shift, transforming into Mini-PUCK. Mini-PUCK will move along D-Lines, collecting any Ora that she touches. She is able to jump between D-Lines and perform Spin Attacks by briefly transforming into the Swordsman; the latter ability is her only means of attack as she is unable to use any ESP Actions. Once she touches solid ground, Mini-PUCK will turn back into PUCK and the Swordsman.

The player also controls Mini-PUCK during the game's MAZEs. Although she cannot use the Spin Attack while in the MAZEs, Mini-PUCK now has other ways of dealing with the G-Hosts that inhabit them. Mini-PUCK can make G-Hosts turn blue either by eating a Power Dot, by destroying Blocks that contain them, or by crushing them with movable Blocks. Once a G-Host is weakened, Mini-PUCK is able to eat it. Each MAZE contains a Boss G-Host. In order to weaken it, Mini-PUCK must eat Attack Dots, eat weakened G-Hosts, or push movable Blocks towards it. Once the Boss turns blue, Mini-PUCK can also damage it by jumping into it.

Like with D-Lines outside of the MAZEs, Mini-PUCK is able to jump between different Blocks. Jumping is necessary in order to interact with movable Blocks. She can also interact with Boosters, which grant a speed boost and a period of invincibility until changing directions or hitting a wall, by touching them. In addition, there are two other power-ups that Mini-PUCK can take advantage of: Mini-PUCK Force and Decoy.

PUCK plays a prominent role in "Pac-Man Circle". During the beginning of the episode, she awakens Swordsman No. 7 from a stasis chamber and declares him to be "The Chosen" who is destined to escape from the planet they are on. PUCK accompanies the Swordsman as he ventures across the planet, encouraging him to defeat and consume his enemies along the way. Eventually, the two encounter a large gate that is guarded by a large golem-like monster. When the Swordsman is unable to defeat the monster, PUCK merges with him, creating a large, shadowy version of herself that is able to unlock the gate. Unfortunately for her, the Swordsman rips her out of his body before they can leave, thus sealing the gate once more. Disheartened but undeterred by her failure, she returns to the facility where she first met Swordsman No. 7 and awakens a new "Chosen".

Trivia[]

  • PUCK is named after Puckman, the initial Japanese title of the original Pac-Man arcade game. The name is presumably (in part) to separate PUCK from Pac-Man himself as a character.
    • Shadow Labyrinth director Seigo Aizawa has stated that, in addition to the reference to Puckman, the character name was inspired by "Puck" from the Shakespeare play A Midsummer Night's Dream.[2]
    • As the katakana for "Puck" would be the same as "Pac" (パック), the character's name is written in English (i.e. as "PUCK") in the Japanese version of Shadow Labyrinth.
