Programming Digipro Powerman (プログラミングデジプロ パワーマン Puroguramingu Dejipuro Pawāman) is a handheld LCD game released by Tomy in 1982. It is a maze game featuring a color screen.
The game was originally planned to be released under the name Programable Digipro Puck Man [sic]; implying a connection to the Pac-Man series, and likely serving as a "sequel" to the Puckman Tomy LSI Game.[1] However, the game was ultimately released under the generic Powerman name, lacking any Pac-Man-related branding.[2] The game itself has little to do with Pac-Man (outside of taking place in a maze), which may have been a factor in the console being rebranded.
Gameplay[]
The player starts in a base in the bottom-left corner (originally labeled "Puckman House"), with an enemy base in the upper-right corner. The enemy monsters drop smaller, red monsters that roam around the maze; the player's objective is to collect these monsters and take them back to the lower-left base. The player will lose a life if they are captured by a larger monster.
Trivia[]
- The opening music appears to be a loose rendition of the Pac-Man theme.
- Powerman's mechanics could be compared to K.C. Munchkin! and the "Eat & Run" game included on the Pac-Man Coleco Tabletop; with the former having moving dots similar to the small "monsters", and the latter involving taking dots back to a home base.
- This is one of two Pac-Man-related LCD games by Tomy to not use official Pac-Man branding, the other being Tomy Watchman: Monster Hero.
