Puck Monster (パックモンスター Pakku Monsutā) is a handheld LCD game released by Gakken in 1982. It is a conversion of the original Pac-Man arcade game. The console was released as simply Pac Man in Australia by Futuretronics; the Puck Monster name was used in Japan and Europe.
Two models were produced: one model uses a completely flat design, while the other features a slightly-slanted top, somewhat resembling an arcade machine.
Trivia[]
- Gakken would later release a game titled Super Puck Monster; this system was a rebranded version of the American Pac-Man Coleco Tabletop.
- Puck Monster, despite using generic branding, was released under license from Namco. A credit to "Namco Ltd." (in Japanese) can be seen on the bottom-left corner of the "slanted" model's box; oddly, the more common "flat" model does not feature this notice.
- A promotion for the Australian "Pac-Man Ice Cream" bar by Pauls featured a giveaway where this console could be won, alongside other Futuretronics-branded Pac-Man merchandise.
- The England-based Computer Games Ltd. (CGL) published Puck Monster in some parts of Europe. CGL also released a console titled Pocket Puck Monster; a rebranded version of another Pac-Man clone titled Monster Maze, originally released by Tiger Electronics.
- The custom-built "Primal Pop - Pac-Man Mix" clock, which is displayed in Namco of Japan's offices, features a Puck Monster system mixed in with various other toys.
- A recreation of the game was released for iOS devices on the App Store, though it has since been delisted.[1]
