"The Shark is a huge predator of the deep ocean. Feared by all mammals in the water, the Shark feeds upon the fear of its prey to attack with stealth and vigor."

— North American manual for Pac-Man World 2

Shark[1] is an enemy that appears in the Pac-Man World series. It is a large cartilaginous fish that attempts to bite its prey with its sharp teeth. Shark is notable in that both its appearance and its behavior have changed multiple times over the course of the series.

Shark appears in Pac-Man World and Pac-Man World Re-Pac as an enemy. Due to it exclusively appearing in the underwater segments of Under Pressure and Down the Tubes, Shark is given a robotic design, a trait that isn't present in its other iterations. Shark's behavior is relatively simple; it continuously swims back-and-forth over a particular area.

The only way Pac-Man can defeat it is to Butt-Bounce on it while under the effect of a Chrome Power-Up/Metal Dot. If Shark is defeated, the player earns 300 points.

Pac-Man World 2[]

In Pac-Man World 2, Shark appears as an enemy exclusive to Ocean. Its behavior has been significantly modified from its first appearance. By default, Shark will swim around in circles, but if it catches Pac-Man's scent, it will chase him either until it catches and eats him or until Pac-Man leaves its range. If Pac-Man is caught by Shark, he will die instantly, regardless of how much health he has left. Pac-Man can defeat Shark by using a Flipper Torpedo Attack. If it's defeated, the player earns 300 points.

Shark appears in the following levels:

A group of Sharks can also be seen swimming in the water below the Ocean Mazes.

Pac-Man World 2 Re-Pac[]

Sharks reprise their role as enemies in Pac-Man World 2 Re-Pac. It first appears in Shark Attack. Their behavior is largely similar to that in the original World 2 but with one key difference: Sharks can no longer instantly kill Pac-Man. That trait is now possessed by the new Wild Shark, a larger variant that can't be defeated. Regular Sharks can defeated with a Flip Kick or Dolphin Kick; doing so rewards the player with 300 points.

The Pac-Knight Era level Sharks Everywhere! introduces a variant of Shark that wears armor on its head; due to this armor, this variant of Shark takes two hits to destroy. Defeating it rewards the player with 300 points. The same level also introduces a new variant of Wild Shark called Mighty Shark.

Shark also shows up as an enemy in Maze Mode, appearing exclusively in Ocean Stage 2. Pac-Man is able to defeat them as Mega Pac-Man, but if he touches a Shark otherwise, he will lose a life.

Additionally, a collectable Gashapon figure of Shark can be obtained from the "Ocean" machine in Pac-Village's Arcade.

Characteristics[]

Appearance[]

Shark has all the features one would expect from such an animal, such as its familiar dorsal fin and its large, sharp teeth. Its Pac-Man World incarnation established some of its defining features, namely its comically over-sized mouth and its small, red eyes. Its skin, composed of metal plates bounded together by rivets, is gray in color. Compared to its future incarnations, Pac-Man World's Shark is noticeably small, not being much larger than Pac-Man. Pac-Man World 2 made some small alterations to Shark's design to have it fit the more naturalistic setting of Ocean. In addition to being at a larger size, its skin is no longer made of metal; in-game, it retains the color from its first appearance, albeit some official artwork gives it a more bluish-gray hue and a white underbelly.

Pac-Man World Re-Pac brought with it Shark's first major redesign. Although Shark's design in this game still incorporates gray metal plates, they now cover only part of its body. The exposed parts of Shark's body show that it is blue with a white underbelly. Its eyes were also redesigned; in addition to being larger and round, their sclera are now white instead of dark grey.

Shark received its most drastic redesign in Pac-Man World 2 Re-Pac. Its proportions and body structure have been completely reworked to have it better resemble a great white shark. Its color scheme was also changed. Its body is now light gray with gray stripes and a white underbelly; moreover, its eyes now have yellow pupils and black sclera. The aspects of Shark's Pac-Man World 2 design that were dropped—such as its red eyes and gray body—were incorporated into Wild Shark's design.

The Sharks that appear in Sharks Everywhere! use a slightly different design. Although it still has a white underbelly, the rest of its body is light brown, with light gray stripes running down its back. The rock-like armor it bears covers most of its face, leaving only its mouth and eyes exposed.

Trivia[]

  • According to Pac-Man World designer Scott Rogers, the original version of Shark was supposed to have a wind-up key attached to its body, further emphasizing its mechanical nature. The key was removed from the final design due to it interfering with Shark's fin.[2]
