Shooting Island: Pac-Man's Great Adventure (シューティングアイランドー パックマンの大冒険 Shūtingua Irandō Pakkuman no Dai Bōken) is a mechanical-based shooting game, developed by Namco and released in 1988.
Overview[]
The Pac-Man's Great Adventure machine features an internal, elaborate diorama based on the Pac-Land arcade game. Players are tasked with defeating Ghosts that are wreaking havoc across Pac-Land. A model train ridden by Pac-Man moves across the track as the player hits targets. The machine supports up to five players, with each player having a separate pedestal.[1][2]
The first (and possibly only) Pac-Man's Great Adventure machine was featured as the central game in a "Namco Land" arcade housed in the Hilton Tokyo Bay hotel. The Hilton Tokyo Bay location is noted as being in close proximity to Tokyo Disneyland; likely influencing the elaborate nature of the game to attract tourists.[1][2] It is currently unknown if Pac-Man's Great Adventure machines were produced for other arcades, or if the game remained a one-of-a-kind attraction for the hotel.
Trivia[]
- Beginning in 1999, the Hilton Tokyo Bay would start a yearly tradition of displaying model train tables for Christmas.[3][4] The tables themselves bare a resemblance to Pac-Man's Great Adventure, which itself features a model train. While it is possible that their similarities are merely coincidental, it may suggest that the Hilton Tokyo Bay's train table is repurposed from, or is otherwise a conceptual successor to, the Pac-Man game.
