"Arachnophobia? These spiders will give you nightmares for weeks!" |
Spider[1] is an enemy that appears in the Pac-Man World series. It is an overgrown arachnid often found crawling on the ground or hanging from ceilings.
History[]
Pac-Man World/Pac-Man World Re-Pac[]
- Main article: Pac-Man World
- Main article: Pac-Man World Re-Pac
Spider appears as an enemy in both the original Pac-Man World and its remake, Pac-Man World Re-Pac. It appears in the levels Crisis Cavern, Manic Mines, and Creepy Catacombs, making it one of only two enemies to appear in more than one world.
Spiders are found either walking on the ground or hanging from the ceiling. If Pac-Man passes under a hanging Spider, it will slowly descend until it reaches the ground, at which point it detaches from the thread it was using and starts crawling. It does not try to actively attack Pac-Man otherwise. Defeating it rewards the player with 200 points.
Pac-Man World 2[]
- Main article: Pac-Man World 2
Spider returns in Pac-Man World 2, once again serving as enemies. Its behavior is largely similar to that in Pac-Man World, except it no longer hangs from ceilings. Defeating it rewards the player with 100 points.
It can be found in the following levels:
Pac-Man World 2 Re-Pac[]
- Main article: Pac-Man World 2 Re-Pac
Spider reprises its role as an enemy in Pac-Man World 2 Re-Pac. In this game, Spider is now able to hang from ceilings like it did in Pac-Man World and Pac-Man World Re-Pac. Other than that, however, Spider's behavior is identical to that in the original Pac-Man World 2. Its point value remains unchanged.
In addition to the levels it already appeared in, Spider now appears in Blinky in the Caldera and Ghost Bayou. In the former level, defeating Spiders does not award any points; instead, it causes five Pac-Dots to spawn, which allow Pac-Man to use the Pac-Dot Attack if he collects them.
Pac-Man World 2 Re-Pac also introduces a more aggressive variant of Spider called Black Spider. It is found exclusively in the Pac-Knight Era.
Moreover, a collectable Gashapon figure of Spider can be obtained from the "Tree Tops" machine in Pac-Village's Arcade.
Characteristics[]
Appearance[]
Throughout all of its appearances, Spider has several features that remain consistent: a small cephalothorax, a large abdomen with spots on it, eight slender legs, and two large eyes. The original Pac-Man World presents a rather stylized version of the arachnid. In that game, Spider's body is purple, and its spots are yellow with black outlines. Said spots are arranged such that they form two rows along the back of its abdomen. Its legs are mostly grayish-brown in color, albeit their tips are yellow.
Spider underwent a somewhat major redesign in Pac-Man World 2. Although its basic body shape remains the same, its color scheme was completely redone. Its body is now brown, and its spots are now green. Additionally, patches of green can be found on its legs, particularly around the joints. Blemishes of red are seen around its two eyes, which have also been redesigned to be Pac-Man-shaped.
Spider's design in Pac-Man World Re-Pac and Pac-Man World 2 Re-Pac draws heavily from its Pac-Man World design. The biggest difference between the two pertain to the spots and the eyes. Along the center of its body is a series of black spots that are connected by a black line. Although the yellow sports aren't as prominent anymore, they can still be found on the sides of its abdomen. Wheras Spider's eyes were round and bug-like in its original design, the iteration introduced in Pac-Man World Re-Pac has eyes that are shaped as though it were scowling. Other changes to the eyes seen in Spider's modern design include the presence of both visible white pupils and black skin markings in the surrounding area.
